Homework HW3: Memory and Caches

Work individually. Submit your answers by email. Any clarifications and revisions to the assignment will be posted on the course help system.

For readability, please put your answers in either a Word file, RTF file, or PDF file, with real tables, not plain text spaced out.

Name the file netID_hw3.type, where type is doc, rtf or pdf.

Do the following Chapter 6 exercises. Clearly label each answer with the number of the exercise.

• Ex. 6.21 (1st ed) / Ex. 6.26 (2nd ed): make a copy of the table and fill in your answers
• Ex. 6.25 (1st ed) / Ex. 6.39 (2nd ed): answer and clearly label parts A, B and C.
• Exs. 6.28, 6.29, 6.30 (1st ed) / Ex. 6.42 / 6.43 / 6.44 (2nd ed): these go together but make sure to clearly label your answers

Note: For Exercise 6.25 / 6.39, the authors say

We always include a problem of this type on our exams because it tests a skill the students will need as working programmers: the ability to look at code and get a feel for how well it uses the caches.
